Keep in Touch!

Do you have a virtual team that works in different buildings, cities or even countries? Here are three suggestions that will connect you all both intuitively and effectively:

  • Instant messaging (e.g. AOL IM, Meebo, Skype, Microsoft Live Messenger). This is great for getting rapid answers or opinions from colleagues. IM programmes are free and easy to manage - you can quickly check your colleagues’ status to find out if they’re available to chat. Webcams provide an extra face-to-face dimension so that you can ‘read’ any non-verbal cues. There are IM mobiles as well as computers for when you’re out and about.
  • Web-based conferencing. This is good for scheduling and managing get-togethers (e.g. for brainstorming, creating a slide presentation, a staff meeting, or training sessions). Programmes such as Lync, Microsoft Live Meeting, GoToMeeting or Webex are common but pricier options and might require coordination with your IT department. Other more cost-effective options for companies on a budget include: ooVoo, Skype, Mikogo, Zoho Meeting, Join.me, Fuze Meeting, yuuguu, Yugma.
  • Project collaborations. Try sharing your meeting notes or other documents on the web using Sharepoint, Basecamp, Yugma, Microsoft Office Live, Google Docs, Zoho Docs, onehub, ThinkFree, Box.net, Dropbox, Sync.in, TypeWith.me or Yammer.
