Surviving The Storm

Recent media reports have suggested that the UK is already entering a period of recession. Although this obviously brings its own considerable pressures, both on individuals and on the team, recession can also be a time when Insight teams can make an even more important contribution to the welfare of the company.

This is because you are in a unique position to be able to identify the key threats and opportunities that face your organisation. Survival – for yourself, your team and your company – depends upon being well prepared and focused on the future.

September’s edition of the Harvard Business Review suggests that your top priority should be to anticipate the needs of both your internal and external customers. You need to prove your value to the company and to show that your contribution is invaluable. You will therefore have to show that your work is relevant and that it will help to address some of the company’s needs in this difficult time.

The Review suggests that an integral part of this strategy will rely on your ability to give your bosses new hope. Find ways to help them to defend the importance of the Insight department. Empathise with them, and support their decisions – even when they’re difficult and possibly unpopular ones.

Survive and thrive
Similarly, learn to be more proactive in motivating your colleagues and boosting morale. Try and develop a strategy for riding out the storm and show that you’re keen and willing to attend meetings. This positive attitude is also in your own interest – if any redundancies have to be made, your company is more likely to retain staff that are both co-operative and helpful.

As a team, take the time to look at recent insights in light of the difficult economic climate. Try and identify different ideas that could help your organisation to survive the recession – and to put it in a good position to start growing again as soon as times start to improve.
