Meet The Team Member - Future-Focused Freda
Each character in this series is designed to portray one of four different styles of behaviour, based on Robert Bolton and Dorothy Grover Bolton’s book, ‘People Styles at Work’. For each style, we are looking at two examples: a person whose approach has more impact upon other people and one that has more impact upon the task in hand.
The style
This month’s member is Freda, who is an Expresser. You may remember that in July last year, we looked at a different type of Expresser - Party Animal Pete. Like Pete, Future-focused Freda is highly expressive, but she tends to be more business-focused (unlike Pete, who is more people-orientated).
As an Expresser, Freda is typically full of ideas and seldom stops for breath. She’s a visionary and often has new ideas to share. She expresses these with great enthusiasm and large, extravagant hand gestures. At times she’s inspirational and is very effective at getting everybody on board.
The substance
However, the main issue with Freda is that she isn’t particularly good at following through issues. Sometimes, her ideas may also be impractical. At other times, she forgets that the devil is in the detail - and unless somebody is keeping an eye on this aspect on her behalf, she can easily get caught out.
The solution
Freda may just need to slow down at times, and take stock of where she is and do some planning – or perhaps team up with somebody else who is strong in this area. She needs to stand back and take a look at the big picture to ensure that it all makes sense, and to make sure that everything stacks up.
This is where teamwork comes in. People like Freda are a great source of ideas and inspiration - but they sometimes just need a little help from other members of the team to ensure that the practicalities are delivered.
